Nearly impossible split-conversion on TV would earn bowler hefty payday
FRANKLIN, Indiana – Ultimate Bowling Products in conjunction with the Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) announced today that the first player to convert the nearly-impossible 7-10 split during televised stepladder finals will earn a $100,000 bonus, compliments of the bowling accessories company.
One of the most infamous and dreaded of splits is the 7–10 split, often called "goal posts" or "bedposts", where the bowler is left with a nearly impossible task for conversion. Only three bowlers have ever converted this spare during televised finals.
PBA Hall of Famer Mark Roth was the first bowler to pick up the 7-10 split on television on Jan. 5, 1980 at the ARC Alameda Open at Mel's Southshore Bowl in Alameda, California. Since that historic day, John Mazza and Jess Stayrook joined Roth as the only bowlers to convert the 7-10 split on television.
To date, no professional woman bowler has converted the 7-10 split on television and Ultimate Products’ Dave Kost, VP of Sales & Marketing, explains why the company chose to bring the promotion to the PWBA Tour for the next two seasons.
“We started this promotion last year with the PBA Tour and we felt it only fair for the world’s best female bowlers to have the same opportunity,” Kost said. “We’re committed to supporting the PWBA, and if this promotion adds just a little more incentive for more women to bowl events, we’ve accomplished our goal in helping to grow our sport.”
The PWBA made its return in 2015 after a 12-year hiatus, and the schedule has grown in 2016, from 11 events to 14. The 2016 season kicked off April 29 in Las Vegas, and as part of an agreement with the United States Bowling Congress, CBS Sports Network will televise 23 major championship bowling events in 2016, including 13 PWBA Tour events.
